G. Michael Spates, Of Counsel in the Firm’s Pittsburgh office, has extensive experience in the area of Pennsylvania workers’ compensation law.
Michael has handled workers’ compensation cases on a statewide basis in Pennsylvania on behalf of insurers and third party administrators. As a practicing workers’ compensation attorney, he has managed all aspects of workers’ compensation cases, including appeals before the Workers’ Compensation Appeal Board, the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania, and Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.
In addition, Michael formerly worked for the Workers’ Compensation Appeal Board in Harrisburg and the Bureau of Workers Compensation in Pittsburgh.
He was an Assistant Counsel for the Workers’ Compensation Appeal Board (WCAB) in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, from 1996 through 1997, where he supervised the WCAB legal staff that was comprised of approximately 30 attorneys. His supervisory duties included training the WCAB legal staff in all areas of Pennsylvania workers’ compensation appeals, including the preparation of WCAB opinions and orders, while providing legal consultation to WCAB Commissioners, in addition to drafting his own WCAB Opinion and Orders.
Prior to his work for the WCAB in Harrisburg, Michael was a judicial law clerk for the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from 1993 through 1996, where he prepared BWC final decisions and orders.
Michael earned both a B.A. and M.A in Political Science from Duquesne Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, and a J.D. from Duquesne University School of Law.
He is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania, and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
