On May 6, 2008, Bob Murdoch from the Firm’s Pittsburgh office presented Senator Trent Lott with the 2008 National Tartan Day Award in Washington DC. This was the 10th anniversary of Tartan Day in the United States and Bob has been the National Chairman for Tartan Day since 1999. On March 20, 1998 the U.S. Senate passed Senate Resolution 155 sponsored by Senator Lott declaring each April 6 to be Tartan Day. He was the first Senator to wear a kilt on the floor of the Senate.

Tartan Day commemorates the contributions that Scots and Scottish-Americans and is celebrated all over the United States and in Scotland and other countries. There are large celebrations in New York, Chicago and Washington DC and countless other celebrations throughout the states. The date of April 6 is the designated date of Tartan Day. It was on April 6, 1320 in the small town of Arbroath in Scotland that the Declaration of Arbroath was signed by some 45 lords and clergy. The Declaration was sent to the Pope who at that time was the head of England, declaring Scotland's independence and freedom.
