Letter from William Rawle to General Daniel Morgan, circa 1794.
In 1791, Rawle was appointed U. S. District Attorney for Pennsylvania by President Washington. By direction of Washington, Rawle accompanied the U.S. district judge and military forces on the western expedition in 1794, and it became his duty to prosecute the offenders involved in the Whiskey Insurrection.
This is a letter from Rawle to General Daniel Morgan who was in command of the Virginia militia in suppressing the Whiskey Insurrection in western Pennsylvania in 1794. "Sir: Understanding that several persons have been brought into town this morning under guard I have to request that you will be pleased to give orders that the names of persons brought in either as delinquents or witnesses be reported as soon as may be to the judiciary in order that the proper measures on our part may be taken without delay as the cases arise . . ."
